What Marketing Looks Like for Real Businesses

Not Influencers or Gurus. Regular Local Businesses.

If marketing advice makes you feel behind, scattered, or vaguely bad about yourself, trust me, you’re not imagining things.

Most of it wasn’t built for you.

It was built for influencers, coaches, and creators whose product is themselves. When that advice gets handed to local businesses and brick-and-mortar shops, it creates chaos. Suddenly you need to post daily, chase trends, master every platform, and build a “personal brand”… all while actually running your business.

The result? Frustration, inconsistency, and the nagging feeling you’re failing at something you never signed up for.

Time to reset.

The Myth You’re Being Sold

Scroll Instagram for five minutes and you’ll see it: post more, go viral, be everywhere. That advice assumes your audience is strangers, your success depends on reach, and you have unlimited time and creative energy.

For most small businesses (and especially local or seasonal ones) none of that is true.

You don’t need 10,000 followers. You need steady inquiries, repeat customers, and word-of-mouth that actually converts.

You need to capture real, live people in your vicinity, not just nameless faces on the Internet.

What Real Marketing Actually Is

Real marketing has a specific order of operations, and it’s probably not what you’d expect:

  • Clear before it’s aesthetic
  • Consistent before it’s creative
  • Useful before it’s clever

It builds a foundation so every effort stacks instead of disappears. When marketing is done right, it feels calmer. You stop chasing algorithms. You start making decisions based on what your business actually needs.

The foundation most businesses skip? Clarity.

  • Who do you serve?
  • What problem do you solve?
  • Why should someone choose you?

From there: a website that answers real questions, an accurate Google Business Profile, and a presence in the places your customers already look. That’s it. Everything else comes after.

What This Looks Like in the Wild

A local ice cream shop that doesn’t run ads, but their Google page has 200+ reviews, their hours are always accurate on their Google Listing, and every time someone new moves to town, they find it within a week because locals refer it above any other spot.

A wedding photographer who isn’t on TikTok. She doesn’t have a viral reel. But her website answers every question a nervous couple is Googling at 11pm. Oh, and she follows up within one business day every single time.

An outdoor gear shop where the guy behind the counter is the one we see on Instagram and his advice is sprinkled into the shop’s Google listing. It all tells the same story with the same voice so by the time someone walks in, the trust is already there that this shop (and it’s gear guy) know what their talking about.

The playbook is refreshingly simple:

  • No complicated funnels or elaborate launches
  • Consistent communication across the channels your customers actually use
  • A recognizable voice that builds familiarity and trust over time

Unremarkable from the outside. Powerful over time.

Stop Comparing Yourself to the Wrong People

Comparing your reach to someone selling courses is like comparing your commute to someone who works from their couch. It’s not a fair fight.

You don’t need louder marketing. You need sturdier marketing — the kind that works quietly in the background, compounds over time, and doesn’t collapse the moment you take a week off.

Ask These Instead:

  • Can someone describe what you do in one sentence?
  • Can they find you easily in a local search?
  • Does your marketing hold up if you go dark for a week?

If mostly yes, you’re doing it right, even if it doesn’t look flashy.

Sustainable Beats Viral Every Time

Real marketing doesn’t spike and crash. It grows quietly and builds something far more valuable: trust, familiarity, momentum.

If you’re overwhelmed, the answer is almost never do more. It’s slow down, strip it back, and build in the right order.

Start where you are, not where the internet says you should be 💛
