How to See Your Google AI Overview Performance

in Google Search Console

You know that AI answer box Google puts at the top of search results now? Turns out, Google will now tell you how often your website shows up inside it. The report is called Generative AI, it lives in Search Console.

This is another great piece of data to help you get a full picture of how you show up in search – and the best part is that if you already have your website connected to Search Console, this data is already there for you.

Here’s where to find it in Search Console:

Step 1: Open Google Search Console.

Go to search.google.com/search-console, sign in, and make sure your website is selected in the property dropdown at the top left.

Step 2: Go to Performance, then Search results.

In the left-hand menu, click “Performance” and open the Search results report. This is the same report you’d use to check your regular search traffic.

Step 3: Find the Generative AI view.

Look for the “Generative AI” tab within the performance report. Click it and the report switches to showing only your appearances in AI features like AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Step 4: Read the numbers.

The main metric is impressions (how often a link to your site appeared inside an AI-generated answer). You can break it down by page, country, device, and date, so you can see which pages Google’s AI is actually pulling from.

One thing to know going in: this report shows impressions only. No clicks, no click-through rate. So it tells you whether Google’s AI is showing your business, not whether people are clicking through. That’s still worth knowing, because AI answers are the first thing most searchers see now, and being invisible there is a different problem than ranking poorly.

That said, Google Analytics is now showing “AI Referral” in your user acquisition reports – that is the companion to your AI impressions here and DOES show how many people actually clicked through to your site from an AI source.
