Web + Graphic Designer

We’re looking for a part-time Web + Graphic Designer, and here’s the twist: this role is as much about words as it is about design. Our websites are built content-first and we are looking for someone who is as comfortable with the words as with the pixels.

Meadowlark Marketing is a four-person agency based in McCall, Idaho. Our clients are small businesses, chambers of commerce, and nonprofits in resort towns: the bar, the boutique hotel, the golf course, the rental shop, the chamber that is also a visitor’s bureau. We’ve been here since 2010, and most of our clients have been with us for a decade or more.

We’re hiring a designer who can build a website as unique as the small business it’s for, turn around a brochure when one is called for, put together a Canva brand kit for a nonprofit, rewrite a client’s About page so it actually says something, design an ad set for a Google display campaign, and be the person we call when a form breaks the week before launch.

Being small means we all wear many hats. We’re looking for the kind of designer who has the motivation to use the tools you have or find the tools you need.  In practice, that means…You can pick the font and fix the DNS record. You edit the copy before you open the builder (and can do some copywriting as well), because the layout should serve the words, not the other way around. You have opinions about what makes a site worth looking at, and you can defend them without getting offended when the client picks the other option (because they always pick the other option!). You test on your phone before anyone asks. You catch your own typos, and you use the tools that catch the ones you miss. When a timeline moves, we hear about it from you first. You would rather ship something distinctive than something safe, and you’re always game to keep learning.

On other thing: we are looking for someone who lives in Idaho. You understand (or want to understand) what it means to market a business in a town of 3,500 that hosts 100,000 visitors a summer.

HOURS, PAY, AND PERKS

  • 25 hours a week, salaried, on a consistent schedule you set with the owner.
  • $48,100 annualized ($37 per hour equivalent), plus a $150 monthly HSA stipend, with a compensation review at six months.
  • Fully remote, Mountain Time hours. While hours are flexible, we aim for at least 3 hours of overlap with a typical 8am – 5pm MST schedule for meetings and client communication.
  • Paid holidays and unlimited PTO (really). Take the days you need as long as deadlines are met and nothing is left hanging for teammates without a plan.
  • Hours have the potential to grow toward full-time. We would rather promote the person we have than hire again.

HOW TO APPLY

Send a link to your portfolio and a few sentences about which site in it you are proudest of and why. Please include a resume. Email: hello@meadowlark.marketing

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and build WordPress websites in Divi 5, from branding guide through launch, roughly one to two new builds a month.
  • Edit, tighten, and, where needed, write website copy. Our sites are built content-first. You will be working from client-provided copy that ranges from polished to a paragraph in an email, and you’ll shape it before you design around it.
  • Can find your way around other website platforms: SquareSpace, Shopify, Wix, Weebly.
  • Run our quarterly website maintenance program: updates, compatibility checks, and fixes.
  • Handle the technical side of a launch: DNS, hosting setup, SSL, redirects, and SEO fundamentals.
  • Build and troubleshoot forms, integrations, and plugins.
  • Make website edits as needed when clients request it.
  • Produce print and digital design as projects call for it: newspaper and magazine ads, flyers, rack cards, social and email templates, digital advertising.
  • Write a short training manual for every site you launch and walk the owner through editing it.
  • Document technical processes in Scribe, Loom, and Notion so the team never depends on one person’s memory.
  • Post a weekly status update in Slack and keep every project current in Asana.
  • Communicate with clients and participate in project meetings alongside our Operations Manager.

 SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Three or more years of professional design experience, agency or in-house. A degree is welcome but a portfolio is required.
  • A portfolio that shows range. We want to see sites that could only belong to the business they were built for.
  • Fluency in WordPress and Divi. Experience with Divi 5 is a plus; experience with Elementor or another builder is fine if you can show the transfer.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS, enough to customize what the builder cannot or utilize tools like Advanced Custom Fields and Divi Engine.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Canva for client-facing templates.
  • Strong editorial instincts. You can tell when a headline is doing nothing, when a page needs cutting in half, and when the client’s own words are the best copy on the site.
  • Comfort with the technical layer: managed WordPress hosting, DNS, SSL, plugin conflicts, basic security and backups.
  • Understanding of on-page SEO and accessibility basics.
  • Clear written communication. Most of our work happens in Slack, Notion, and Asana, and most of our clients are not technical.
  • The ability to run several projects at once and tell us early if something is going to slip.
  • Self-starter who can be productive in a remote setting.
